“If the cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail. Because the goal of America is freedom, abused and scorned tho' we may be, our destiny is tied up with America's destiny.” —Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
Juneteenth is currently a state approved recognized holiday marking the date of declaration of the emancipation proclamation in Texas in 1865 on June 19th, a mark of actions to put an end to slavery. We recognize these important dates in history to learn and reflect about humanity and the powerful nature our actions have and will have. Historical reflection is but one of many ways we citizens of this State and Country must see our education and continued learning as adults, grounded in what is just and with what impact good moral judgment can have on the future. Remembering to always ask if all people have been brought to the table when decisions are made and ideas are brainstormed paves a path of consideration and respect to the entirety of our community.
